Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxation. So natural in fact, that you do it all the time . . . we all do! The idea is to quiet your conscious mind and create a level of focused awareness so that your subconscious is open to positive suggestions.
The patterns and habits that are such a big part of your daily life aren’t anchored in your conscious mind. These things live in your subconscious. Your conscious mind is analytical. It’s like a computer that’s constantly comparing new information to what it already believes. If you believe on some level that you cannot change, then just thinking about change—or trying to force change through willpower alone—doesn’t work. The conscious mind is working against you.
This is why it can be so hard to change, even when you want to.
The power of hypnosis is bypassing the analytical mind to communicate new, healthy, transformative suggestions directly to the subconscious. That way, your analytical mind “computer” doesn’t get a chance to reject them before they take hold. Hypnosis allows you to reprogram your computer altogether, and replace old thought patterns you want to change with new ones.
New Thought is a blanket term for the idea that our thoughts and our beliefs are powerful and help create our reality. You may have heard the saying, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” Yeah . . . it’s kinda like that. Only better.
But there is a double meaning here . . . New thought Hypnosis operates from the idea that your mind is powerful, yes . . . but also the power is in the fact that you can choose a new thought! WHAT DOES HYPNOSIS FEEL LIKE?
You enter a hypnotic state in your daily life without realizing it. You know that deeply relaxed state between sleep and waking that you enter when you wake up in the morning, or as you’re drifting off to sleep? That’s a hypnotic trance state. The same is true when you’re driving, and suddenly arrive at your destination without remembering how you got there. You were in control and driving the car the whole time, but your mind was somewhere else.
If you meditate regularly, you know the sensation of being untroubled, relaxed, and calm. That is the feeling of hypnosis.
Hypnosis will not cause you to act against your own beliefs. You won’t do anything you would not normally do in a fully awake state. There’s no clucking like a chicken until someone snaps their fingers; that’s just a myth. It’s not a form of “mind control”—you are in control at all times. You also can’t get “stuck” while hypnotized, any more than you could get stuck in a nap.
